I have the honour to address you on the subject
of an appointment to the post of Translation Master at Queen's Col- -lege.
2.
In this connection I would refer (i) to the letter of the Director of Education dated 22nd. March, 1910, which 27e formed an enclosure to Sir Henry May's Despatch No. 187 of 31st.
May, 1910, (ii) to page 70 footnote 20 of the Estimates for the
year 1911, and (iii) to the List of Changes in the holders of
494appointments at Queen's College for the March Quarter, 1911, in
which the appointment of Reverend H. R. Wells to the post of Trans- -lation Master was reported as having been made on 13th. January,
You
1911.
3.
In recommending this appointment the Director
of Education wrote under date 24th. November, 1910, as follows:-
"Mr. Wells' qualifications as a Chinese
scholar are of a high order. He is a keen educationist and a man of high character and great ability.
"Mr. Wells does not wish to sever his connect- -ion with his Mission( the London Missionary Society); but as, if he accepts the appointment, he will be expected to work the
full school hours, this need be no objection. On the other hand we shall be getting his services at far less than the
market
